About Us
Animalistic Encounters Ltd, Established in 2021
It’s all about the animals here at Animalistic Encounters and if you’re just as crazy about animals as we are, you’re bound to enjoy your time with us.
Animalistic Encounters started in 2019 as the brainchild of Lexi and Alex. After almost 2 years of building work (thanks COVID!) we gained our Animal Activities Licence from Chelmsford City Council in September 2021, opening our doors just a few weeks later.
The end result is our 1200ft² centre where we can welcome guests as well as teach students and volunteers the intricacies of caring for a group of very specialist animals.
Lexi, our Managing Director holds an MSc in Animal Welfare and Conservation, a Level 3 Diploma in Animal Assisted Intervention (OFQUAL, DEFRA), as well as a number of other animal qualifications. She has worked with children in a professional capacity for over 18 years and holds a bachelor's degree and PgCert in Advance Social Work with a focus on children.
Our other staff and volunteers hold a range of animal qualifications such as Level 2 & 3 and a Bachelor's degree in Animal Management.
Covering Essex, Suffolk, Kent, Hertfordshire and further afield for all types of education, clubs, events and parties.
Our Animals
Many of our animals are rehomes who have come to us after their original owners were unable to care for them any longer. Our animals are used to being around people and being part of encounters, however some animals are unsuitable for certain types of encounter or are only available during our on-site encounters, for more information please contact us.
Animal Welfare
Understandably one of our top priorities is the safety and wellbeing of the animals. While we make every attempt to provide the animals requested as part of any encounter or event, we reserve the right to change animals or take them off display completely in cases where the animal is unwell, stressed or unable to carry out the encounter safely.

Animal-assisted Intervention
Animal Assisted Intervention (AAI) is a type of therapy that involves animals as a form of treatment. The goal of AAI is to improve a patient’s social, emotional, or cognitive functioning.
Animal Assisted Intervention services can help children, adolescents, adults and older people with mental health needs, physical or learning disabilities, to achieve increased health, wellbeing and quality of life. Animal Assisted Intervention animals are selected by trained staff on temperament grounds to provide therapeutic visits to hospitals, nursing homes, hospices, special needs schools, prisons, etc.
While there are many businesses and individuals claiming to offer "Animal Therapy", more often than not they have no officially recognised qualifications or registration, and in many cases have just taken a £30 course online. The lack of regulation around Animal Therapy allows for unqualified and unregulated individuals to deliver a service which is likely to exploit or cause further harm to vulnerable people. There is a lot of lobbying for change going on at the moment to implement stricter laws around the delivery of Animal Assisted Therapy. In the mean time, we would urge that you check the credentials and registration of the practitioner so that you can be assured of their level of training and recourse for any issues.
Before choosing someone to go through your journey with, be sure they are suitably qualified and belong to a recognised professional body such as Social Work England, BACP or ACP-UK
Lexi heads up our Animal Interventions team, with 9 years of post qualified social work experience and relevant qualifications including a Bachelors Degree in Social Work, a PgCert in Advanced Social Work, an MSc in Animal Welfare and Conservation, and a 2 Year Level 3 Diploma in Animal Assisted Intervention. Lexi is registered with the professional bodies; Social Work England and The British Association of Social Workers (BASW).
So you can be sure that our team is suitably qualified and experienced to help deliver AAI. So why not give us a call to discuss how we can assist you: 01245 910456
More information on Animal-assisted Interventions
We get asked a lot about ‘Animal Assisted Therapy’. There are a lot of blurred lines and a lack of accurate information available so it is important that before accepting a service, you have done the research for yourself to prevent issues later down the line. Currently in the UK, there are no national minimum standards HOWEVER, there is a code of practice which outlines very clearly what Assisted Therapy is. Animal Assisted Therapy is just ONE intervention which falls under the umbrella of ‘Animal Assisted Interventions’ or AAI.
AAI covers:
- Animal assisted Therapy
- Animal Assisted Activity
- Animal Assisted Play Therapy
- Animal Assisted Education
Animal Assisted Therapy is a goal directed, outcome focused intervention which can only be delivered by a qualified practitioner or clinician (e.g psychologists, social workers) who must be actively registered with their registered body (e.g Health & Care Professionals council or Social Work England). The intervention is planned, monitored, assessed and evaluated within the realms of multi-agency working with an emphasis on the importance of safeguarding and service user wellbeing. Animal Assisted Therapy is good for working with intense trauma, attachment and SEN. Sessions may also incorporate CBT. An animal handler may help or assist in these sessions.
Animal Assisted Activity is a meet and greet, fun for everyone. There is no planning or evaluating involved and is a great opportunity for people to enjoy their shared love and passion of animals and being together, creating happy moments and memories and a safe controlled environment. These sessions are run by animal handlers and volunteers.
Animal Assisted Play Therapy is similar to Animal Assisted Therapy however, must be conducted by a qualified and active play therapist. An animal handler or volunteer may be present to assist in the sessions.
Animal Assisted Education is an intervention to support children in school, developing social, emotional skills, reading skills and works great for children with SEN. Sessions are usually run by a qualified teacher and an animal handler may assist in these sessions.
Animal handlers should be qualified to work in and assist in AAI prior to delivering the service and there are many courses available. Be aware however, there are many courses available online which are not regulated and claim to give handlers an “animal assisted therapy” qualification.
Animal welfare is also vitally important in any of the interventions undertaken. A vigorous behaviour and welfare assessment should be conducted prior to works commencing to ensure the animal is appropriate for the sessions ahead.
Practitioners will also require separate liability insurance which covers them for intervention based services.
We hope this helps clear up some of the myths and blurred lines around the interventions however, please feel free to reach out to us if you would like more information

Our Animals
-
Where have your animals come from?
Around half of the animals we keep have come from responsible breeders or private collections. The other half of the animals we keep have either been rescued or donated to us. Some of the animals rescued or donated are unsuitable for public display and so will live out their lives with us in private.
-
Are we able to handle all the animals?
While we spend a lot of time preparing the animals for public handling, not all of them are suitable or enjoy being directly handled and prefer being stroked only. When making your booking and choosing your animals we will provide information on which animals are suitable for handling and which can be stroked.
-
Do the animals bite?
As with any animal they have the potential to bite. Our animals are trained to take part in encounters and desensitised to the encounter process, however we cannot remove the risk entirely and we constantly seek to minimise that risk throughout the encounter.
-
Can we request specific animals?
Yes we are generally able to take requests for specific animals, however, understandably one of our top priorities is the safety and wellbeing of the animals. While me make every attempt to provide the animals requested, we reserve the right to change animals or take them off display completely in cases where the animal is unwell, stressed or unable to carry out the encounter safely.

We require access to an electricity point and clean water facilities and need 4×2 meters in order to setup our tables and equipment.

-
Do you have risk assessments?
We complete risk assessments on each and every encounter, these can be provided on request.
-
Other animals?
While we appreciate that you are probably also animal lovers and so have your own pets at home, we require that all animals such as cats & dogs are located in a separate room and have no access to the encounter space while our animals are on site. This is to prevent distress to our animals while they are out on encounters.
